Introducing Apeel Produce

Apeel’s plant-based protection helps produce last 2x longer and makes the food you already buy more sustainable. Apeel is Food Gone Good.

What is Apeel?

What if instead of fruits and veggies going bad, they went good? This is the question Apeel asked in setting out on a mission to fight food waste. The result is Apeel’s plant-based protection that enables fresh produce to last 2x longer, fighting food waste and enabling benefits across the supply chain from farm to fork.

Wondering how that’s even possible? Read on.

How it Works

By adding an edible, extra “peel” Apeel protects fruits and vegetables from water loss and oxidation, the two primary causes of spoilage.

The Apeel solution is inspired by nature’s own technology. Think of any fruit or vegetable: a lime, an avocado, or a stalk of asparagus. Each comes naturally equipped with its own peel or skin to protect it. Inspired by this, Apeel uses materials found in skins, peels, and seeds of plants as the basis of its shelf-life innovation.

Apeel reduces food waste and gives you more time to enjoy the flavor and nutrition of fresh produce.

Apeel Avocados

Timing when to eat an avocado can be tricky.  One day it's not quite ready.  The next?  It's another case of food gone bad.  But Apeel Avocados are different.  They're what we call Food Gone Good.  And that's all thanks to their little extra "peel"- or protective coating- made from edible, plant-based materials.  Because of this plant-based protection, Apeel Avocados stay fresh, creamy, and delicious 2x longer. And when Apeel Avocados last longer, they are much less likely to go to waste.  When you choose an Apeel Avocado, you're helping conserve water and avoid greenhouse gas emissions.  That's a win-win all around.

Apeel Limes

Limes: they're fragrant, tangy, and add the perfect zest to just about any beverage or dish.  But what happens when they dry up and lose their flavor?  That's a case of food gone bad.  Apeel Limes are different: They're what we call Food Gone Good.  Why? Because Apeel Limes last 2x longer, meaning you have more time to enjoy your juicy citrus fruit, and they are much less likely to end up as waste.  For every Apeel Lime you buy, you help conserve water and avoid greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chain.  That makes them good for you, and good for the planet.

Top FAQs

How Does Apeel Keep Produce Fresh?
Apeel keeps moisture inside produce and oxygen out, which dramatically slows the rate that produce spoils. By maintaining moisture and reducing oxidation, Apeel supports the plant’s natural abilities to protect against environmental stressors.

When produce is fresh, it not only looks better but more importantly it tastes better and contains a higher density of nutrients. Apeel makes it possible for growers to optimize their practices and avoid harvesting before ripeness, allowing fruits and vegetables to develop full quality (from nutrition and delicious flavor to appearance and texture) before they embark on the journey to the grocery store.

What Types Of Fruits And Vegetables Are Used To Make Apeel?
Because the materials needed to make Apeel exist in all fruits and vegetables, it can be made from any kind of fruit or vegetable — although some fruits and vegetables are richer sources of lipids than others. This includes the parts of the plant that typically go unused after harvesting, such as the peels and seeds.

What If I Have A Food Allergy?
Allergic responses can be triggered when the protein from an allergenic source is present in a food product. Apeel products are not protein-based, but rather lipid-based — and lipids are not a source of regulated allergens. We also conduct testing to confirm the absence of regulated allergens. That said, if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to a fruit or vegetable, you should continue to avoid it whether or not it is an Apeel fruit or vegetable.
